Instead of being installed on top of a layer of sand over gravel, the
patio bricks were installed on top of a layer of sand over more sand
that was apparently mixed with cement. The sand-cement layer varied
from about eight inches to around a foot thick. It required a bit of
effort to break up. Now I'm not sure what we will do with it.
